Veteran tech journalist and commentator Dan Gillmor has announced that he is leaving the San Jose Mercury News to embark upon a citizen-journalism project. You can read more about his plans here.

I’ve been pushing for nearly 15 years the notion that journalism, thanks to cheap computers and the Internet, is something that everyone will increasingly be able to do. Yet true citizen journalism will require not just the tools (which I think everybody has access to), but also the best values of traditional journalism, which not everybody yet aspires to — fairness, sourcing your work, and so on.

That’s why it’s good to see someone like Gillmor, with his strong roots in traditional journalism, stake out some ground in the citizen-journalist space.
